Bidadari Park

Bidadari Park is an integrated park nestled within the Bidadari estate, designed and constructed to enhance both community living and ecological sustainability. Central to the completion of this project, CPG was instrumental in the realisation of this project, delivering a comprehensive suite of services, including architecture, civil and structural engineering, environmental engineering, project management, and master planning.

The project was conceived from a collaboration between CPG and industry partners through a blue-green masterplan that sought to bring the vision of “A Community in a Garden” to life.

A key attraction of Bidadari Park is the picturesque 1.8-hectare Alkaff Lake. Backed by CPG’s expertise in design engineering, this multi-functional drainage infrastructure is the first-of-its-kind. In dry weather, Alkaff Lake resembles a regular lake, forming part of the community’s recreational and aesthetic space. But during heavy rainfall, it serves as a retention pond to regulate stormwater runoff, with the capacity to hold up to 40,000 cubic metres of water, the equivalent of 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The engineering strategy behind the lake carefully integrated floodplains to manage runoff to the downstream drainage system, along with an underground vortex filtration system that maximises space efficiency while supporting both flood resilience and public enjoyment. This innovative approach reflects the capabilities of the multidisciplinary local team behind the park’s delivery.

To establish Bidadari Park as a haven for biodiversity, the team integrated a marshland experience within the Woodland, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife. The Marshland Boardwalk complete with a pavilion and observation deck allows visitors to take a break while immersed in nature.

A land bridge, which is planted carefully with curated species of plants and trees, links the main area of Bidadari Park to the hillock across the road. Not only does this improve accessibility, it acts as a conducive route for butterflies and birds.

The Heritage Walk offers a unique trail that celebrates the area’s biodiversity and rich cultural history of Bidadari. By pedestrianising the former Upper Aljunied Road and transforming it into what is now known as the Sang Nila Utama Boulevard, residents can stroll and exercise along wide, shaded pathways flanked by majestic Rain Trees.

Key Features

Alkaff Lake is an artificial lake that doubles as flood control and an ABC Waters feature – the first of its kind in Singapore.

During heavy rain, Alkaff Lake acts as storage to retain the stormwaters from the surrounding catchments before discharging to the public drains. This helps to safeguard nearby urban infrastructure by mitigating the risk of flash floods.

To address spatial constraints in the estate, the design incorporates multi-functional terraced wetlands and an underground vortex filtration system. These features not only treat stormwater at source but also free up surface area for community and recreational use. As a result, the estate’s drainage system is better equipped to handle intense rain events, while residents benefit from a scenic and engaging communal space integrated into their living environment.

Project Member Quotes

The team’s design philosophy for Bidadari Park is to respect, transform, and beautify. Through the thoughtful transformation of the space, we want to create multifunctional areas that meet the community's diverse needs while honouring the heritage of the original location and inspiring a connection with nature and promoting biodiversity.
