Chongqing City of Inspiration

“Chongqing Hill – City of Inspiration”, located in Yubei District, Chongqing, sits adjacent to Wangjiazhuang Station. It is a pioneering residential community and commercial hub developed under the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model. The project aims to create an integrated environment that combines transportation and commercial functions, serving as a central hub for the local community.

Rooted in the city’s evolving residential fabric and expanding metro network, the project was never conceived as a single, static build. Instead, it has unfolded organically over time, growing and adapting like a living system, its form shaped by the emergence and transformation of the surrounding urban functions. Eventually, the entire project will become an important functional supplement to the residential clusters in the area and a core node of the subway system, connecting the city, the subway, and the residential areas, and integrating nature and artificiality.

It takes shape as a three-dimensional garden block closely connected with nature. Its architecture weaves together vitality and culture, creating a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Local design elements, including water channels and arches, are thoughtfully incorporated, inspiring a distinctive façade expressed through fluid lines and wave-like textures.

Architectural detail control is the key point. The arcade adopts the mould red brick collage process, supported by steel pipes, and sealed with aluminium plates and embedded with lamp grooves, forming a quaint and elegant spatial interface; The facade of the central bookstore adopts a double-layer skin, with a brick like metal decorative box on the outer skin, which is connected by a zipper. The facade frame is decorated with aluminium alloy extremely narrow profiles, which not only reduces the weight of the structure, but also highlights the construction aesthetics with exquisite detail design.

Key Features

Terrain-Responsive, Multi-Level Masterplan

The site’s natural hills were preserved, and the terrain was followed rather than flattened. This created nearly 20 metres of level difference across the district and resulted in a three-dimensional garden district with winding pedestrian paths and green terraces. This allows for an experience which resembles walking through a natural hillside.

Dialogue Between Tradition and Modernity

Architecture blends local cultural motifs with forward-looking contemporary forms where buildings have distinct identities but maintain a cohesive visual language.

The Arch and the Restored Water Channel

Throughout the site, there are signature architectural elements inspired by historic arched water channels on the site. Motifs reinterpreted through various arch forms, from classic vaults to modern sculptural expressions. This symbolises continuity, memory, and the bridging of past and future.

Water-Inspired Landmark Façade

One marquee point is the bookstore façade designed to evoke cascading water. Made from suspended metal bricks (ceramic-like finish) arranged in gradients of size and density, the dynamic, light-filtering façade creates a poetic link to Chongqing’s rivers.
