Limbang Shopping Centre

Located near Limbang Park, Limbang Shopping Centre is an example of a successfully revamped neighbourhood shopping centre. The design idea for its rejuvenation was conceived as early as 2020 by CPG Consultants, whose proposed design was awarded the Certificate of Merit (Design) at the HDB Awards 2020, under the ‘To-Be-Built Rejuvenation’ category.

As the architect behind the project, it was CPG Consultants’ primary goal to inject vibrancy into the space and create an environment that fosters a sense of community. Prioritising community engagement as a core function of an HDB Neighbourhood Centre, the design focused on building more vibrant and attractive spaces for residents to gather, socialise, and connect. The old central thoroughfare was converted to create an open community plaza with seating. The covered community plaza is bathed in natural light, creating a welcoming ambiance, and offering an ideal setting for various community activities.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the development also reused existing structures to mitigate the significant carbon footprint associated with producing new concrete. The building features a modern roof with skylights and a covered, cross-ventilated community plaza on the first floor, designed to maximise natural ventilation and daylighting. These elements work in tandem with energy-efficient systems, such as solar panels and high-volume, low-speed fans, to minimise operational carbon emissions over the building’s lifespan, ensuring a sustainable environment without compromising user experience. With these sustainable features, Limbang Shopping Centre is the first HDB non-residential building to achieve BCA’s Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy Award 2022.

Additionally, the outdoor areas of Limbang Shopping Centre are enhanced with abundant lush greenery and biophilic features, incorporating local species to enhance user well-being and biodiversity, while actively contributing to decarbonisation efforts.

Project Member Quotes

Our CPG landscape architecture team envisioned bringing rustic charm back to this beloved Neighbourhood Centre by blending nostalgia with modern touches that enhance community well-being and celebrate heritage and nature. Much of the construction took place during the COVID period, but despite the challenges, the vision came to life through close collaboration with our client HDB, the main contractor and other partners. Every detail, from the Kampung-themed playground to biophilic elements around, was thoughtfully designed and executed. I still remember spotting a dragonfly by the water feature after completion, a quiet affirmation that we had restored something meaningful to the ecosystem.
